Just a day after announcing that things are moving forward on his long awaited video game adaptation Sleeping Dogs, Donnie Yen is also moving forward on a big Hollywood English language crime epic titled Golden Empire. The news comes via Deadline and once again, Yen will be on villain duties in this one just like his hit Hong Kong gangster thriller Chasing the Dragon.
Golden Empire will see Yen producing as well alongside Crazy Rich Asians producer Peter Luo and will have Yen playing “a notorious drug kingpin who hits the top of the most wanted list for both the U.S. and Mexican governments.”
It was Yen’s role of a true life gangster in the smash hit Chasing the Dragon which prompted Luo to choose Home for the project. Luo made a statement on what excitement Yen brings to the upcoming film.
“The talents of Donnie are undeniable and will be utilized in every imaginable way to bring this epic story to life. Spanning the continents of Asia, North America and South America, Golden Empire is really the first major narco film with an Asian lead that plays to global audiences. Showcasing diversity in cinema, while retaining authenticity, has always been a primary focus of ours, and this unique and fascinating story is representative of our mandate,”
Yen will be seen next in Disney’s live action MULAN which was originally supposed to be released in theaters already but has been delayed due to the pandemic. The film is currently slated for an August 21st barring any further cancellations.
