Friday was certainly a surprise day for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the superstar held a surprise press conference to officially announce that he will be involved with a new MMA sports biopic.
Per Variety which ran with the news, the MMA flick will center on the life of former MMA champ Mark Kerr and will hail from Johnson’s own production banner Seven Bucks Productions as Johnson will serve as a producer also along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia as well as Beau Flynn. Johnson will play the role of Kerr which will mark the first time that the former wrestling superstar turned Hollywood icon will play a real life individual in one of his films.

Johnson was at Madison Square in New York City last night where he gave the surprise press conference and during it he mentioned that he spoke to Kerr that very day. Johnson stated, “He’s overwhelmed that this is happening, and I love that he trusts me with his life and with his story.”
Variety asked The Rock what drew him to the role and he simply said, “It’s a dramatic role, but Mark lives a dramatic life. It’s an opportunity to shine a light on one of our warriors, who not only deserves it, but who has such universal appeal and a universal story.” Johnson went on to say, “The guy was a beast and he was dominant and there was only one like him at that time,” Johnson continued. “When you think about these fighters, there is no other sport like MMA — the multiple disciplines and the pressure and the fact that you put your life on the line, literally, every time you step in the cage — and if you dig a little deeper than the physicality that they have, there’s a real character of depth to a lot of these warriors, and Mark is one of them.”
Mark Kerr is one of the most prolific MMA champs in history and was known as the The Smashing Machine, The Titan and The Specimen respectively. During his career, Mark was a two time UFC champion and was regarded as the best of the best in the field.
The project is in the early stages with now studio attached as if yet. Johnson is a busy man as he also has the family films Jungle Cruise and the new Jumanji sequel as well as the big budget Netflix action spectacular Red Notice coming as well.
