Now here’s some casting that will please genre fans everywhere as The Hollywood Reporter is saying that The Raid And Triple Threat star Iko Uwais is in talks to take on the role of The Hard Master in the upcoming Snake Eyes: GI Joe spin-off film that is in development.
For those of you not in the know, The Hard Master is the teacher that instructed both Snake Eyes And Storm Shadow In The Arashakagi Clan. Gerald Okamura previously played him in GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra while RZA took over in Retaliation.
When and if Uwais takes on the role, he will join already announced cast members Henry Golding who will play Snake and Warriors’ Andrew Koji who won the role of Storm Shadow.
The Snake Eyes spin-off is one of two planned GI Joe films set to reboot the franchise with the latter being an ensemble pic. Robert Schwentke (Red, R.I.P.D) is Set to helm the spin-off from a script penned by Evan Siliotopoulous who is also known for The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
The Hashtag Show unveiled a supposed synopsis for Snake Eyes:
“The spin-off prequel will follow a younger ‘Snake Eyes’ “as a street fighter in Peru. Driven by the desire to avenge the death of his father, Snake Eyes is apparently a man on the move until he ends up in Japan, where he and his best friend, Tommy, aka Storm Shadow, will begin their training with the Arashikage Clan. The film will see at least 3 of the clan’s legendary masters as they train Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow as Hard Master, Soft Master and Blind Master are all set to appear. Also present at the Arashikage compound is the film’s female lead, Akita. In comic continuity, Junko Akita was an apprentice and lover of Storm Shadow; here she is the head of security and will be a love interest for Snake Eyes.
Of course if it’s a GI Joe movie, Cobra must somehow be present and in this instance their presence is made manifest in what appears to be a character created for the film: Kenta. Kenta is revealed to Storm Shadow’s brother who has long since left his family, the Arashikage, and joined with a rival ninja clan, the Kurayami. It is Kenta who attempts to lure Snake Eyes away from the Arashikage and into a terrorist plot being devised by Cobra. We won’t delve too deeply into spoiler territory here, but we can see what side of things Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow will take and this film certainly seems to set the stage for one of the great comic book rivalries.”
As a life long Snake Eyes And GI Joe fan, this project is really starting to shape up and with the inclusion of a martial arts powerhouse like Iko Uwais, this film has the makings of action gold.
Uwais has been on the rise and the casual western audience is starting to see what we Die Hard action fans have known all along which is Uwais being a powerhouse in the action genre. From roles in Mile 22 to the recent Netflix hit series Wu Assassins, Uwais is cementing himself as one of the top tier action performers in the world. Landing this role in Paramount’s GI Joe spin-off will certainly get his brand out there even more and I must say that that would be Action-Flix Approved!
The Snake Eyes spin-off is eyeing an October 16th, 2029 release, so keep it locked and loaded right here for more to drop!
In the meantime, check out Uwais in action from his hit film The Raid 2 in the player below because this is the type of action he’ll bring to GI Joe!
