Paramount is definitely rolling with the marketing campaign for the latest live action adaptation of the iconic Street Fighter video game and while the jury is still out on whether it’s a good movie, there’s no denying that it looks awesome and faithful. The film hails from Bad Trip’s Kitao Sakurai and fans should get their fill of the visual aesthetics as well as the immense fighting design. Featuring an all-star cast this Street Fighter looks battle ready so immerse yourself in the latest trailer that focuses on the special moves of the characters!
Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!
In celebration of the film’s release, Paramount and IMAX have announced a special event where hardcore fans can see the movie early on participating IMAX screens!
On Thursday, October 15th, in celebration of opening day, fans can be among the first to see “Street Fighter” in IMAX by attending the “Street Fighter: Bonus Round Fan Event,” at participating IMAX theatres nationwide, 7PM local time. Guests who attend this event will receive an exclusive “Bonus Round Fan Event” collector’s print, while supplies last, and will be treated to 7-minutes of bonus content from the film!
Kitao Sakurai helms the ambitious project with an all-star ensemble led by Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Eric André as Don Sauvage with Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Kyle Mooney as Marvin, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy round out the supporting cast.
My initial TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION to the footage released thus far said that this live action Street Fighter “delivers spot on chemistry between Koji and Centineo which is essential to the Street Fighter lore. Throw in video game and Anime accurate look, style and vibe compounded with gravity defying fight choreography that mixes extreme with visceral and this one looks to finally bring the energetic fun of the IP that fans have been waiting for. Plus, Sakurai looks to have understood the assignment for this in spades, so fingers crossed the entire product keeps the thrills alive that this trailer does and delivers on the promise.”
This latest promo only enhances what I think as it highlights all the spot on finishing and special moves of each character. The visuals and fight action look punishing, and this film might outdo Mortal Kombat II which hit earlier this year. From Ryu’s Hadouken to Chun-Li’s spinning bird kick and Zangief’s Russian suplex, they’re all here for the immediate gratification of fans dying for an accurate adaptation that they will want to watch over and over again.
If anything, I” go see the film just so I can purchase the Guile wig popcorn bucket. that is a definite chef’s kiss.
Will the full film deliver on that first reaction? We will have to wait and see but as of now, this looks like it will be the most faithful and hard-hitting live action Street Fighter delivered to us yet.
