I see what you did there HBOMAX. With a future that looks to be uncertain and will most likely end up with the hit steaming service being swallowed up by Paramount, the powers that be teased us earlier with an announcement that a new Trailer for Lanterns was dropping tomorrow. Then they pulled a 180 and dropped it today. Starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, this first look certainly proves that this isn’t going to be Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds. It looks fantastic and a little off the cuff and I’m all in so check out the footage now!
Synopsis: The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The new series definitely showcases more blackest night than brightest day as Jordan and Stweart ride into a small town where something is not right. It has a western vibe that is without a doubt something new for the property and Chandler looks sensational as a grizzled, tired and extremely pissed off version of Hal Jordan. Pierre, who shined in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge. also looks spot on and the chemistry between the two look palatable. Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Jason Ritter as Billy Macon round out the cast.
We see a brief glimpse of the Green Lantern uniform and Jordan does take off into the sky, but it is evident from the start that DC Studios is wearing this close to the vest. There are no big reveals but that hopefully will pay off when the series hits this summer as an August release date is pending. One thing is sure and that’s Lanterns is looking to go the Peacemaker route in terms of adult content as the F word is blurted out more than once. James Gunn did say that each project with the DCU would radiate different looks and feels and it looks like he’s telling the truth.
Chris Mundy, who serves as co-creator and showrunner, described this first season of Lanterns like True Detective which is a welcome switch for a superhero series. This is a murder mystery wrapped in a comic book fueled world, and it looks to satisfy on all levels.
It’s almost time to suit up, so put on your ring and stay right here for more to come on Lanterns!
