Here’s a bit of worthy news that hit a few days ago and my apologies for the tardiness in putting it on my site as it’s been hectic, but Lionsgate has confirmed that a fifth John Wick film is in active development. The kicker is that the film company is being coy with whether Keanu Reeves will be involved or not.
The news came via Jenefer Brown, who is the EVP and Head of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate. Wow, now that’s a title. I’m just an assistant manager at my lowly job. She mentioned in an official statement that the John Wick universe is continuing to expand which includes a fifth film in the blockbuster Gun Fu franchise. Brown made the announcement while speaking at an event for the John Wick Experience in Las Vegas.
“This world continues to grow and expand in incredible ways. Up next, of course, we have Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie, and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film. I think there are more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game.”
Now with a fifth film a go, the question is will Reeves play a part or not? We all know, and if you don’t, I can’t help you, but SPOILER ALERT, Wick died at the end of the fourth film. Or did he? There are many fan theories going around on that one. Personally, I don’t see how or why you could and would do a fifth film without Reeves. Just continue to do spin-offs or prequels. Ahhhhh, is John Wick 5 a prequel? We will have a very long wait to see.
Brown added on Reeves, “We’ve shared that we’re developing a fifth John Wick film. [John Wick] may be [dead]. We are all on bated breath waiting to find out.” Well played Miss Brown. Well played.
Reeves does show up for a cameo in Ballerina this summer but that film takes place between the third and fourth John Wick films so that is how he is there. Ana de Armas takes up arms in that one and hopefully she can deliver some of that Baba Yaga magic.
Like I said, this is all taken with a grain of salt as the movie is in early stages of development so there won’t be a number five for a long while but hopefully in the meantime, the John Wick universe will still cook with Ballerina and the Donnie Yen led Caine spin-off movie too. Fingers crossed.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina starring Ana de Armas and his array of firepower along with Keanu Reeves and his cameo hits theaters this June 6th!
