No one cannot say that action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme hasn’t tried different things in his career. The breakout star of 1988’s Bloodsport could have done the same thing over and over again but the Muscles from Brussels was never satisfied with being regarded as just an action star. It’s true that some of these more interesting projects were hit or miss like the sensational performance he put in for his hyper-real drama JCVD. But for every JCVD there’s The Mercenary which was a massive misfire for Netflix. here Van Damme tried to do the action-comedy thing but neither the action nor the comedy stuck out with fans who watched.
All I can say now is oh boy does this look interesting as JCVD is trying his hand at action-comedy once again with the new Frensh film The Gardener (Le Jardinier). Van Damme is going to kick it as the gardener for a wealthy family who just happen to be on a government death list and must improvise and adapt to stay alive. The film hails from director David Charon who also co-wrote the script with Vincent De Brus and Sebastien Fechner. Actor and writer Michaël Youn also stars as the owner of the chalet that Van Damme works at who harbors a dangerous state secret. Expect what will hopefully be signature Van Dammage with fingers crossed comedic beats that hit their mark when this one hits next year. Scroll below for the new footage which is in French with no subtitles but who cares as Van Dammage is multilingual!
A new French poster has made its way online detailing the silliness of the film with Van Damme front and center armed with a pair of pruning shears. Eh, why the hell not. Check out the new key art below as well courtesy of Van Damme on social media.

Upon viewing the trailer, which is in French, I must say that I’m intrigued as Van Damme looks pretty brutal in it with some nasty violence and savage beats in the action sequences. Sure, we have an infant vomiting on someone but what’s a little puke and hijinks if Van Damme is doing old school Van Dammage. As a fan of JCVD from the beginning, I am obligated to check out anything he does until he actually retires like he said he would do a few years back so I’ll be there when this one hits the states.
Right now, The Gardener is set to hit Amazon Prime Video France on January 10th but expect more international debuts hitting soon after.
