I’ve been discussing a lot lately about the next generation of action film stars and while conversations usually head towards Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling, to name a few off the top of my head, there are some lesser thoughts about actors and actresses that can make a strong case. One such actor is Oscar nominee Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion) who has rocked the film industry with a slew of dramatic films that are unrivaled. Yes, Patel is and underdog when it comes to talking him up in action circles but ever since the first trailer for his upcoming Monkey Man hit, we have all taken notice as the film, which looks like an Indian John Wick, has more layers to go along with the brutal action choreography. Monkey Man is destined to be a sleeper hit this year and Patel is looking to give other well-known action stars like Statham and Adkins a run for their money.
A brand-new trailer for Monkey Man has emerged with even more explosive footage and if you weren’t convinced from the first trailer, then this latest one will certainly push you towards seeing just how action-oriented Patel is in front of and behind the camera as he also helmed the breakneck thriller. Scroll below to see Patel go all Gun Fu and Mr. Wick on the criminal underworld after wearing a monkey mask as he takes beatings in underground fights! You had me at monkey mask.
Official Synopsis:
Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).
Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven), Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Makarand Deshpande (RRR), Jatin Malik (making his film debut), and Zakir Hussain (Duranga) round out the cast. Patel also produced the film along with Oscar winning filmmaker Jordan Peele (Nope, Get Out).
Monkey Man unleashes his pent-up frustrations in theaters on April 5th!
