Well may wonders never cease! Lionsgate, it would appear, is finally set to move the long gestating reboot of Highlander starring Henry Cavill forward. The report coming out of Deadline states that the movie company will be looking to sale the film package at the AFM in hopes of rejuvenating a strike plagued market.
With John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski set to direct and Henry Cavill still in the lead, even after all this time, it’s a no brainer for distribution. The project is also said to be a big budget extravaganza with a price tag of over 100 million. With that budget, I’m trying to not set my expectations too high but with that bank going into it and the talent in front of and behind the camera, the results better be sensational.
Cavill is perfect for the role as he has the looks and fighting capabilities after starring on The Witcher for Netflix. Cavill flashed some very impressive fight choreography with empty hands and swords so this reboot just might be a shot of adrenaline the action genre needs.
Deadline is also saying that Stahelski is going to treat Highlander as John Wick with swords so you can imagine how ambitious the action set pieces are going to be.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline — spawned four sequels and three TV series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Queen memorably provided the soundtrack for the original movie. Per Deadline.
Mike Finch has written the most current draft of the screenplay. This film has been kicking around in development hell since 2008 when Summit first took a stab at it. Pardon the pun. Hopefully, this one kicks into high gear soon and is not affected anymore by the ongoing strike. 2024 is looking like a carbon copy of the pandemic with theaters having no product to showcase.
