HORIZON: Kevin Costner Saddles Up to Helm His Epic Western this August

I don’t know about all of you but Kevin Costner can essentially do no wrong in my book. Yes, some of his directorial efforts were overblown and Waterworld is indeed a guilty pleasure (I REALLY hate that term by the way) but Costner turns any project he’s in whether it’s in front of the camera, behind it or both into an event.

Costner has been busy the last few years starring in the awesome streaming series Yellowstone and it’s pretty much given me back my love of all things Costner but this August, he’s returning to directing and it’s going to be…well…epic.

According to Variety, Costner is set to saddle up to direct his first Western, or film for that matter, in over twenty years. The last time he directed was 2003’s Open Range which also happens to be one of my favorite westerns and this one is going to be a massive undertaking.

The film is a western called Horizon and according to the report, it’s going to be split up into four separate movies. That’s right…four, count ‘em four, different movies that will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”

Costner’s plan for the four part epic is that one entry will come out about every three months. The project is being brought to us by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

“It’s a really beautiful story; it’s a hard story,” Costner told Variety. “It really involves a lot of women, to be honest. There are a lot of men in it, too, but the women are really strong in ‘Horizon.’ It’s just them trying to get by every day in a world that was impossibly tough. They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men. They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious, that at wasn’t easy, and how vulnerable people were.”

The actor also made the comment that casting is now underway and that there are 170 speaking roles involved in the epic.

Kevin Costner, in my eyes, is one of the last tensing true Hollywood stars and the man knows how to make a solid and vastly entertaining western so I’m nothing but stoked for this project. Costner is also currently filming the fifth season of Yellowstone.

Keep it locked and loaded right here for more details to come as we are your destination for everything action in 2022 and beyond!

In the meantime, while we wait for season five of Yellowstone and Horizon in the future, check out Costner in action in one of the greatest western shootouts in cinematic history.
