When Richard Donner sadly passed away earlier this year, it was thought that a fifth Lethal Weapon wouldn’t materialize anymore. After all, Donner helmed all of the films in the franchise so many were saying that it died with him.
In an interesting turn of events, series star Mel Gibson announced that he will in fact direct the fifth film and that he had Donner’s blessing to do it.
According to several sources, Gibson made the announcement Saturday evening while the star was attending a special event in London.
Gibson also confirmed that he will return as Martin Riggs although Danny Glover has not made an announcement. Glover was on board when Donner was still directing so it should bode well for fans to see him return as well. Hopefully he does as it won’t be a Lethal Weapon film without both involved. We’ll keep you updated.
Production is said to commence sometime next year but nothing definite has been set as this is all developing.
It is being reported that Gibson will play an older Riggs (of course) and that there will be a “comedic bent” to it. Not so sure what that means as there was humor in all the films.
Personally, I thought the series ended perfectly with number 4 years ago so here’s hoping if this does happen, that it works out well. Stay tuned.
