A reboot to the popular comic book heroine Red Sonja has been in development for what seems to be decades now but according to the Holloywood reporter, the reboot is finally getting some traction as actress Hannah John-Kamen, who will be seen in Sony’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City, has officially enlisted to play the titularheroine of the sword and sorcery epic.

According to THR: Hannah John-Kamen, who starred as a villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp and was a lead in series Brave New World, will star in Millennium’s long-gestating sword and sorcery feature.

Joey Soloway is directing the project and co-wrote the script with Tasha Huo, the screenwriter who is showrunning and executive producing the upcoming animated Tomb Raider series for Netflix and Legendary.

Red Sonja was first created in by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics’ Conan the Barbarian way back in the 70’s and made it to the big screen back in 1985 in the guilty pleasure flick known simply as Red Sonja which starred Brigitte Nielsen and the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie was made to capitalize on Arnie’s success as Conan in the two feature films. This version was not as much of a success however but has gone on to become a cult hit.

Joey Soloway will helm the pic from a script penned by Tasha Huo, who’s best known for being the screenwriter as well as showrunner for Netflix’s Tomb Raider series. The film has been in development for so long that at different times  Rose McGowan and Amber Heard were both attached to play Sonja.

“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja,” said Soloway in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”
