GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE: Netflix Acquires the High-Octane Female Driven Actioner with Franchise Potential! (Update: The Movie Receives an R Rating)

By: John M Jerva

UPDATE: News coming from Film Ratings, is stating that the Netflix and STXfilms’ all-star female centric action-thriller Gunpowder Milkshake has officially been rated R from the MPAA for “strong bloody violence throughout and language.” This bodes well for fans looking for more adult oriented and extreme action films. Stay tuned for more!

Here’s another movie that I’m interested in seeing and up until now, I kind have forgot about it since it’s been a while since there’s been any traction on it. Deadline is reporting that Netflix is at it again in the action genre by acquiring the female led action pic Gunpowder Milkshake. The news dropped today although I just recently saw it as I’ve been busy with a slew of reviews and interviews but I definitely wanted to run this as it’s clearly a must see flick with the level of talent involved.

Per Deadline: The film will add to the summer lineup that Netflix disclosed earlier in the week. The female-centric action film stars Karen Gillan. Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Paul Giamatti, Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh and Chloe Coleman also star. The action-heavy film’s focus is three generations of female assassins who fight to stop a vicious cycle of violence that has haunted their lives. The action takes place over the course of one night.

Official Synopsis: Sam (Karen Gillan) was only 12 years old when her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey), an elite assassin, was forced to abandon her. Sam was raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now, 15 years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps and grown into a fierce hit-woman. She uses her “talents” to clean up The Firm’s most dangerous messes. She’s as efficient as she is loyal.

But when a high-risk job goes wrong, Sam must choose between serving The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent 8-year-old girl – Emily (Chloe Coleman). With a target on her back, Sam has only one chance to survive: Reunite with her mother and her lethal associates: The Librarians (Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh and Carla Gugino). These three generations of women must now learn to trust each other, stand up to The Firm and their army of henchmen, and raise hell against those who could take everything from them.

One interesting tidbit is that a sequel is already in the works even before the film has seen the light of day. Netflix is looking at making this title another franchise hopeful for them as they look to win the streaming wars that are raging as of late. Netflix also recently acquired two sequels to the Rian Johnson helmed Knives Out which was a sleeper hit last year. That deal cost them somewhere in the ballpark of $450 million.

Last year Netflix brought their action A game with titles like The Old Guard with Charlize Theron and Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth which was billed as the most watched movie of 2020. Action hits keep on coming and with the pandemic still playing havoc with cinemas, the streaming services are reaping the benefits of people staying home more.

Navot Papushado helmed the pic and also co-wrote along with Ehud Lavski. Quentin Tarantino called Gunpowder Milkshake one of the best action flicks of the year and it was a success with audiences during it festival run.
