We have some acquisition news for you here today and it has to deal with the great Nicolas Cage as RLJE Films has nabbed North American rights to his upcoming action flick Prisoners of the Ghostland which sees Cage playing a Snake Pliskken type role where is a prisoner that is released to execute a do or die rescue mission. Just like the iconic Escape from New York with Kurt Russell, Cage’s character which is aptly named The Prisoner is wearing a leather suit which will self-destruct in three days if all does not go well. Cage has been on a role as of late with genre bending pictures like Mandy, Jiu Jitsu and the upcoming Willy’s Wonderland which looks just as crazy as this one so it looks like Cage is going to busy for the foreseeable future!

Prisoners of the Ghostland is set in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption.

The movie is helmed by acclained  Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono (Why Don’t You Play in Hell) who is making his English language debut with this one and starring with Cage are , Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Nick Cassavetes (Face/Off), Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Franchise), and Yuzuka Nakaya (The Forest of Love). The biggest thrill for me in this one is that Japanese bad ass Tak Sakaguchi also has a part in it and here’s hoping that he is utelized to his fullest. Tak is best known for the cult classic Versus as well as Re:Born and the awesome looking Crazy Samurai: 400 VS 1.

“We’re excited to once again work with Nicolas Cage on a highly-anticipated film directed by the celebrated Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono,” Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer of RLJE Films, said in a statement. “Following the success of Mandy and Color Out of SpacePrisoners of the Ghostland is already receiving great buzz and we cannot wait for audiences to see it at Sundance.”

Prisoners of the Ghostland makes its debut this week at the Sundance Film Festival so lets hope that we get a release date and trailer soon to wet our appetites!
