EXTRACTION: Joe Russo Teases an Expanded Universe for the Future of the Chris Hemsworth Led Action Flick!

By: John M Jerva

Recently, reports surfaced that Joe Russo, who is one half of the dynamic filmmaking brother team The Russo Brothers, was actively working on a script for the follow up to Netflix’s blockbuster action extravaganza Extraction which stars the MCU’s Chris Hemsworth. The film was an action master class directed by veteran MCU stunt maestro Sam Hargrave and once it debuted to strong numbers, rumblings of sequels, or prequels, immediately flooded the net.

Now in an interview with Collider, Joe Russo dropped another fantastic bit of news in that they are trying to map out an expanded universe for the new franchise which may include spin-offs and team up films. Check out Russo’s comments below!

“I’m still not gonna commit because I think it’s more exciting to surprise people, but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you’re interested in David Harbour’s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie.”

“We’re trying to find more interesting ways to tell these stories and cross-pollinate them. We’re big fans of just forging new paths in narrative. Can we go backwards and forwards at the same time? Can things that happened in the past affect the movies in the present? What are new ways to tell those stories? And can we see different points of view? Every antagonist is the protagonist in their own story, so can we see their point of view? How do they perceive the world? What makes them empathetic? I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we’d like to diversify the point of view in those movies.”

Hargrave and Hemsworth are expected to return and it’ll be interesting to see if the future flicks go backwards or forwards in time or possibly both. The ending to the first film definitely left things open so the possibilities are endless.

Russo also gave an update to when the follow up may go in front of the cameras by saying:

“The intention is to start rolling cameras on Extraction 2 sometime next fall. Chris is a busy guy so we have to figure out his schedule, but that’s the intent at the moment.”

With that statement, we have a long wait to see what happens but hopefully we get more info STAT. Hemsworth’s character of black market Merc Tyler Rake was bad ass and I would love to see films starring Harbour as well as Bollywood star Randeep Hooda who was equally bad ass as Saju. Only time will tell how this all plays out.

In the original film,

Extraction (formerly known as Dhaka) takes place in an underworld of weapons dealers and traffickers, and follows a young boy who becomes the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. After being trapped by kidnappers inside one of the world’s most impenetrable cities, his rescue beckons the unparalleled skill of a mercenary named Tyler Rake. But Rake is a broken man with nothing to lose, harboring a death wish that makes an already deadly mission near impossible.

Like I said, it’s no secret what I thought of the movie and it was probably the best action pic of the year when we definitely needed some new product in the wake of the pandemic. Hemsworth, who was a star in comic book action films, solidified his action hero status with this one and to read my complete thoughts on the film, check out my full review in the link below!

Keep it locked and loaded right here for more to come as we are your destination for everything action!

As always, I love to give you all a visual treat, so check out a fist pumping action set piece from the original and watch Hemsworth go all action hero on the bad guys!
