THE PLANE: Solstice Studios Acquires the Gerard Butler Actioner for Worldwide Rights!

By: John M Jerva

Just a few days after it was announced that Gerard Butler would be returning to play Mike Banning in Night Has Fallen, we now have word that another picture the star will be in titled The Plane has been acquired by Solstice Studios in a worldwide rights deal. Coincidentally, the film was originally at Lionsgate but that studio dropped the film when the production couldn’t obtain proper COVID-19 insurance.

Per Deadline who brought the news: “Based on a story by Charles Cumming and Christian Gudegast, with a script by Charles Cumming, JP Davis and a recently revised draft by James Coyne, The Planefollows commercial airline pilot Ray Torrance (Butler) who heroically lands his storm-damaged aircraft on a remote jungle island in the Philippines, only to find himself stranded in a lawless war zone and the newfound target of ruthless pirates gunning to take the plane and its passengers hostage. As the world searches for the missing aircraft amidst a growing media frenzy, Ray must keep his passengers alive long enough to be found or to find a way out.”

The Plane will be produced by Di Bonaventura Pictures’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, MadRiver Pictures’ Marc Butan, as well as Butler himself and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE banner.

The movie is planned to shoot in June of next year as Butler will first film the action-thriller Kandahar in January as the upstart studio has found a way to self insure the production and the Butler led actioner is just the film to keep their momentum going as their first film Unhinged starring Russell Crowe was a big hit as it was the first film to release theatrically a few months back.

Butler is also currently filming the action pic Cop Shop which also stars Frank Grillo and with Night Has Fallen waiting as well, he is certainly busy as one of the premiere action stars working in film today. Greenland is also set to hit theaters next month. The disaster epic sees Butler trying to survive and protect his family from a comet hurling towards Earth.

Keep it locked and loaded right here for more to come as we are your destination for everything action!
