Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the biggest stars on the planet and one time he was a superstar with the WWE. It’s hard to believe but there was a time when Johnson was unproven in cinema and The Scorpion King was his first ever headline role. It makes sense that the character holds a soft spot in his heart so it comes as no surprise that if there was ever a reboot, he would want to be involved.
That’s exactly what is happening according to Deadline who brings word that Johnson and his Seven Bucks Production Banner along with partner Dany Garcia is looking to redo the franchise with a new actor and set the film during modern times which is interesting. The Rock has chosen Jonathan Herman, who wrote the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, to pen the script.
Per Deadline: The original film followed a desert warrior that rises up against the evil army that is destroying his homeland. Plot details are vague on what this reboot will do differently then the original, but sources do say that unlike the original, this one will be a contemporary take set in modern times.
Johnson also spoke about the new project and what it means to him: “The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” said Johnson. “I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hardworking actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”
As stated, Universal will choose a new actor to step into the role and while Johnson says that he won’t appear in the reboot, there’s always a chance that he could make an appearance and pass the torch.
There have been a string of DTV sequels but those films haven’t faired as well as the original. Actor and martial artist Victor Webster appeared in the last two films with Michael Copeland starring in the second one as a younger version of the character. It will be interesting to see who lands the part this time around but Johnson most certainly has input on that.
Johnson in action from the original film
With The Rock involved, I’ll be interested in seeing how the reboot plays out and with the modern times take on it, I get a retro Beastmaster 2 vibe going for it, and if you’ve seen that film then you and I can be friends.
