Stunt maestros turned directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are pretty much household names especially in the action cinema crowd but before the two pros became known when a little film called John Wick came out, they were heavily involved in the stunt world for many high profile films with The Matrix trilogy being one of them.
Stahelski and Leitch were part of the stunt force that put together the iconic films and now they have returned full circle as they are both working on The Matrix 4 which was in production until the pandemic ran amok. Both actin masters aren’t involved in the actual hands on this time but it is revealed that they are working on the conceptual part of the process.
In a recent interview with Collider, Stahelski said that fans won’t be disappointed and that the franchise is “coming back with a vengeance.”
In the chat, Stahelski stated “They were really cool. They asked us to help out with the choreography and some of the physical training for the guys. I’m helping out a little bit for a sequence, I think Dave’s helping out for a sequence. Lana’s come back with a lot of love to have a pseudo-family reunion, so that’s been a lot of fun. It’s been good to see a lot of the crew members again. We just finished doing a sequence in San Francisco before the pandemic started.”
He then elaborated on how he and Leitch are more of the concept crew this time around.
“It’s more about the creative concept of some of the choreography and backing them up with stuff,” Stahelski explained. “Other than the Matrixes, most of their stuff…what makes [Lana] so great is she directs her own action. We’ve had second unit directors on some of the Matrixes just because of the logistics involved. But of late, and especially on Matrix 4, she’s directing her own action. The second units for them are mostly establishing shots, the B-sides of the some of the compositions for some locations. But Lana, she does her own action. She weaves it into the main unit stuff, which is why their stuff looks so good.”
Now, of course, plot details are none existent as of now and unfortunately we will probably have to wait longer for the film due to recent events but it has been highly publicized, by myself as well, that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back although to what extent we don’t know.
Lana Wachowski, who co-directed the original trilogy, is back in the director’s chair and she also co-wrote the film along with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell.
With Stahelski and Leitch involved once again, fans can expect more and amped up action set pieces for sure and this is one film I’m dying to see first footage from. Keep it locked and loaded right here for more on The Matrix 4!
