Casting remains in high gear for the anticipated G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes spin-off movie which has already announced that Crazy Rich Asian’s star Henry Golding will play the title role of the silent Ninja Commando with Warrior’s Andrew Koji enlisting as Storm Shadow his Arashikagi Clan brother and enemy and action star Iko Uwais (The Raid, Triple Threat) suiting up to play the Hard Master, the man who trains them both.
Now more news drops via The Wrap in that the film has found its Baroness in international star Ursula Corbero. The actressw is best known for the hit Netflix series Money Heist and according to the site she has closed a deal to play the Cobra superspy. Corbero is also known for Paranormal Xperience 3D and Isabel.
In the realm of G.I. Joe, “The Baroness was the alter ego of Anastasia Cisarovna, a wealthy young woman who was radicalized by the death of her brother. She was also an expert in cryptography, psychological warfare, and biological warfare after receiving extensive training. Baroness also held a grudge against Snake Eyes, whom she blamed for the death of her brother. Additionally, she formed an unusual romantic bond with Destro, one of Cobra’s top leaders.”
The Snake Eyes spin-off “centers on the origins where he tries to become a member of the Arashikage Clan, a ninja clan based in Japan. According to “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra: The Essential Guide,” the Arashikage worked as shadowy assassins for generations, using deception to earn their keep as ninjas, as well as developing a reputation for being able to perform impossible tasks.”
The Hashtag show brought down a much more detailed synopsis earlier this year:
“The spin-off prequel will follow a younger ‘Snake Eyes’ “as a street fighter in Peru. Driven by the desire to avenge the death of his father, Snake Eyes is apparently a man on the move until he ends up in Japan, where he and his best friend, Tommy, aka Storm Shadow, will begin their training with the Arashikage Clan. The film will see at least 3 of the clan’s legendary masters as they train Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow as Hard Master, Soft Master and Blind Master are all set to appear. Also present at the Arashikage compound is the film’s female lead, Akita. In comic continuity, Junko Akita was an apprentice and lover of Storm Shadow; here she is the head of security and will be a love interest for Snake Eyes.
Of course if it’s a GI Joe movie, Cobra must somehow be present and in this instance their presence is made manifest in what appears to be a character created for the film: Kenta. Kenta is revealed to Storm Shadow’s brother who has long since left his family, the Arashikage, and joined with a rival ninja clan, the Kurayami. It is Kenta who attempts to lure Snake Eyes away from the Arashikage and into a terrorist plot being devised by Cobra. We won’t delve too deeply into spoiler territory here, but we can see what side of things Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow will take and this film certainly seems to set the stage for one of the great comic book rivalries.”
Stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith, who just recently choreographed the awesome action in Netflix’s WU ASSASSINS, will be handling the action set pieces in this one as well so expect some serious damage when it comes to the on screen fisticuffs!
The GI JOE: SNAKE EYES spin-off will be helmed by Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulous (Bright 2, The Huntsman: Winter’s War).
As a die hard JOE fan, I am super psyched for the new film and with word that another G.I. Joe ensemble film is in the works, it’s certainly great to see traction amping up on this franchise. There was a time where I thought there wouldn’t be another film on the horizon and to now have one based on my favorite characters of Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow is a dream come true.
There’s no telling how many more JOE characters will be added to the mix but here’s hoping that this spiu-off will be linked to the ensemble film with all principle characters reprising their roles. There has been also rumors circulating for a few years now that the G.I. JOE property would share a combined universe with other Hasbro franchises like the TRANSFORMERS, MICRONAUTS and M.A.S.K. but that still remains to be seen.
Production is said to commence later this year and a relase date is set for October 16th, 2020 so expect more news to keep dropping in the future so keep your swords at the ready and get ready for some serious Ninja action…G.I. Joe style!
