UPDATE: Via his official Instagram account, actor Gabriel Luna, who was set to reprise his role of Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider, confirmed to fans that the show was indeed DOA on Hulu. Luna pointed out that this is an uncertain business and things don’t always go yoyr way. Check out Luna’s poste below!
File this under sucky news for the day as Deadline is reporting that Hulu has decided to not go through with a planned Marvel Ghost Rider series. The streaming service which is owned by Disney had acquired the rights to the show along with another Marvel property Helstrom. What makes this news even more hard to swallow is that Gabriell Luna, who portrayed the character on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., was also set to reprise his role of Robbie Reyes, one of the characters from the comics who had become the demon anti-hero.
According to Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva who broke the news: “While Marvel’s Helstrom is on track, I hear Hulu and the Ghost Rider team had reached a creative impasse which could not be resolved, leading to the streamer’s decision not to move forward with the series.”
Stephen Lightfoot was to executive produce the show as well as serve as showrunner as well. Hulu as of now, has a few Marvel properties in tow including Runaways which has been renewed for a third season as well as the upcoming animated shows Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show and Marvel’s Howard The Duck which are all set to debut next year. Helstrom is also set to debut in 2020 along with the now scrapped Ghost Rider.
The antihero Ghost Rider, also known as Robbie Reyes, is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields. The character was brought back to the Marvel Universe in 2016 on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Robbie Reyes version, played by Luna, who was set to reprise the role on Marvel’s Ghost Rider. Creative differences seems to be the main reason for Hulu deciding to not go forward with the show. There is word that it may get shopped elsewhere or maybe end up on the Disney+ service but that is all heresay as of now.
I am bummed of course over this as I was excited to see the series on Marvel and I am also hoping that reports that the Netflix Marvel shows will find new life on Hulu also. We will just have to wait and see what transpires but hopefully Luna will be able to play the popular character again.
