Well, it didn’t look like it was going to happen but I guess the re-release with that extra footage reaaly did help as Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has officially bested James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest grossing movie in the world. The feat happened over the weekend and the totals are in confirming Endgames place in the history books. With all the hoopla of the SDCC this past weekend, the current MCU flick quietly took over number 1.

Avatar was the king for many years with a record total of $2.789 billion and with numerous blockbusters like the current crop of Star Wars films to hit,it seemed like the position would be safe. Not any more folks. Endgame has now officially made $2.790 billion worldwide and even though that’s close, it still counts boys and girls.

Being the gentleman that he is, Cameron took to Twitter and the official Avatar page to congratulate the MCU and its accomplishment. The image below shows off Iron Man being swarmed by Avatar’s Woodsprites much like sam Worthington’s character was in th the film. You can see the post below!

Avatar, of course dominated the box office in late 2009 to 2010 to become the champ and it was also re-released in late on in 2010. After Endgame shattered the box office in its opening weekend with a nstaggering $357 million domestic take, the race was on to see if it could actually do it. Well, they did and it looks like this film might be the champion for a long time to come. Well, at least until Cameron’s sequels are finally released so we will have to see what happens.

The first Avatar sequel is set to hit on December 17th, 2021 with the third film expected to open on December 22nd, 2023. Number 4 opens on December 19th, 2025 and the fifth film is due on December 17th, 2027 so Cameron has four chances to best Avengers in the long run. These release dates can change and we have seen that over the course of the years.

Official Synopsis: Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers — Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner — must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos — the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.

Avengers: Endgame is set to hit Digital on July 30th while the hard copy 4K, Blu-Ray Combo Pack and DVD unleash a few weeks later on August 13th.

Congratualations Marvel, “We Love You 3000.”
